Semjong
Semjong Gewog, situated on the eastern side of Tsirang District, spans an area of 14.5 square kilometers and lies approximately 21 kilometers from the Dzongkhag headquarters. The gewog comprises five Chiwogs: Tashiling Teod, Tashiling Mead, Dzomling, Drangreygang, and Dekiling.
Despite its mountainous terrain, Semjong is well-connected via a 7.5 km Gewog Centre (GC) road and additional farm roads, enhancing access to local markets and basic services. The altitude ranges from 900 to 1600 meters above sea level, offering a favorable environment for agriculture.
The community thrives on cultivating paddy, maize, dhal, beans, orange, and cardamom crops that form both staple diets and commercial produce. Livestock farming is a vital economic contributor with piggery, broiler poultry, and dairy contributing to nutritional needs and high income generation.
Semjong is home to a population of 2,978 residents—1,537 male and 1,441 female across 320 households. All Chiwogs have access to road, electricity, safe drinking water, and communication services. Community facilities include one Primary School, one Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) center, and a Primary Health Centre located in Dzomling Chiwog, ensuring access to basic education and healthcare.
Culturally, the gewog embraces its spiritual heritage with a Hindu mandir located in Dzomling and a Buddhist lhakhang at Drangreygang, reflecting its religious diversity. Semjong’s natural beauty is further accentuated by seven prominent streams—Bararay, Chagay/Jaringay, Katikey, Katikey Andhary, Rata Pani, Kali, and Kokrey Andhary which meanders through the Gewog. While the Chachey River flows along the boundary shared with neighboring Dunglagang Gewog, playing a role in irrigation, biodiversity, and ecological balance.
In recent years, Semjong gained national attention through the Semjong Integrated Water Supply Scheme, a pilot project under the De-suung National Service. This initiative not only improved irrigation and drinking water access but also symbolized the gewog’s role in Bhutan’s modern development narrative.
