Election
The main function of the Election Commission is to hold peaceful, fair and free Parliamentary and Local Government elections and National Referendums that would bring in a stable and vibrant democracy for Bhutan. It is responsible to set up an election system that would allow Bhutanese to elect good people to Parliament, and have competent and qualified Council of Ministers to provide good governance and meet the aspirations of the people in terms of development, well-being and prosperity.
Vision- “An independent election management body that promotes the vibrant democracy envisioned in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan.”
Mission- 1. Conduct Free and Fair Elections and Referendums in the Kingdom of Bhutan.
2. A credible Electoral Roll.
3. Clear, consistent and precise by laws.
4. Strong civic and voter education programme.
5. Optimum ICT enable electoral system.
6. Research for informed decisions.
7. Dynamic and independent decision-making and management system.
8. Voter friendly polling stations.
9. A roster of professionalism and reliable election officials on call at all times.
10. Mature partnership with stakeholders.
Mandates
As per the Constitution of Kingdom of Bhutan, 2008, Article 24, Section 1, states, There shall be an Election Commission which shall be responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and periodical updating of electoral rolls, the election schedule, and the supervision, direction, control, and conduct of elections to Parliament and Local Governments, as well as holding of National Referendums, in a free and fair manner.
